Axillary brachial plexus block: method of choice?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The first brachial plexus block is said to have been performed by William Halsted in 1884 [32], soon after Roller [13] had demonstrated the local anaesthetic properties of cocaine. He injected the drug under direct vision, after exposing the plexus using infiltration anaesthesia. The first percutaneous blocks were performed independently in 1911 by Hirschel [11] and Kulenkampff [14], using the axillary and supraclavicular routes, respectively. Interscalene block was described by Etienne [8] in 1925.

Axillary brachial plexus block--an underused technique in the accident and emergency department.
OBJECTIVE To compare axillary brachial plexus block and Bier's block as methods of providing upper limb anaesthesia. METHODS Axillary brachial plexus or Bier's blocks were performed on all patients requiring upper limb anaesthesia in a three month period. For Bier's block, a single cuff tourniquet and 3 mg/kg 0.5% prilocaine were used. For axillary plexus block, 40 ml 1% lignocaine with adren...
متن کاملUltrasound guided axillary brachial plexus block.
The axillary brachial plexus block is the most widely performed upper limb block. It is relatively simple to perform and one of the safest approaches to brachial plexus block. With the advent of ultrasound technology, there is a marked improvement in the success rate of the axillary block. This review will focus on the technique of ultrasound guided axillary brachial plexus block.
متن کاملThe Extent of Blockade Following Axillary and Infraclavicular Approaches of Brachial Plexus Block in Uremic Patients
INTRODUCTION This study was aimed to compare the axillary approach performed through multiple injection method and vertical infraclavicular approach performed through single injection method in terms of the sensory and motor block onset, quality, and extent of blocks of brachial plexus in uremic patients who underwent arteriovenous fistula surgery. METHODS Forty patients scheduled for creatio...
متن کاملDevelopment of performance and error metrics for ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus block
PURPOSE Change in the landscape of medical education coupled with a paradigm shift toward outcome-based training mandates the trainee to demonstrate specific predefined performance benchmarks in order to progress through training. A valid and reliable assessment tool is a prerequisite for this process. The objective of this study was to characterize ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus bl...
متن کاملDifferent Learning Curves for Axillary Brachial Plexus Block: Ultrasound Guidance versus Nerve Stimulation
Little is known about the learning of the skills needed to perform ultrasound- or nerve stimulator-guided peripheral nerve blocks. The aim of this study was to compare the learning curves of residents trained in ultrasound guidance versus residents trained in nerve stimulation for axillary brachial plexus block. Ten residents with no previous experience with using ultrasound received ultrasound...
